The theme for 2019 Hermès window display is “In the pursuit of dreams”.
Close your eyes, picture yourself in the endless countryside, watch the puffy white clouds floating across the blue sky, feel the rustle of dried grass beneath your feet.
Welcome to the rural dream of an urban dweller.
This is a world where nature meets fantasy, the shape of a lake resembles a horse, a barn transforms into a wicker bag; a world where humans and animals cross their paths.
A curious horse is the recurring character that appears in every window display. Always on the go, the horse wanders from one window display to another, meeting its fellow creatures, spying upon a fisherman and a girl, stealing apples from a tree stump table in a wood.
The window displays are filled with familiar signs of rural life, such as folk patterns, headscarves, ceramic milk jugs and sheaves.
To deliver the idea, we employed various weaving techniques. In addition, video screens were embedded in the trays that were used for the Women and Tableware window displays.
The videos featuring clouds drifting across the sky create a mirror reflection effect. The video screens add a modern touch while enhancing the sense of nostalgia and subtle naivety.
As I felt it was important to touch upon sustainable development and celebrate handicraft, almost every element of the window displays was woven by hand from natural materials.
Some first sketches of this idea
My friend Andrey Zhandarov created a motion project inspired by the store window design I made for Hermès. He used a 3D scanner to transfer the objects from store to a different context: decomposed the world of the window displays into a polygonal state of the motion world with allusions to physical objects. The woven elements of the window displays turned into digital landscapes.
